Umzimkulu River - Port Shepstone
Crossing the Umzimkulu river you
catch your first glimpse of the famous Port Shepstone lighthouse. It
was manufactured in Britain, and the cast iron components were shipped
to Natal in the 1890s. It was first used at Green Point to Port
Shepstone where it replaced an ordinary ship's of Aliwal Shoal and
later moved to Port Shepstone where it replaced an ordinary ship's
masthead lantern.
Port Shepstone is the biggest town on
the South Coast with a busy shopping district and a growing light
industrial sector. It is investor friendly and visitor -friendly with
some excellent hotels and conference centers and 18 kilometers off
beaches stretching both north and south. It incorporates the seaside
suburbs of Sunwich Port, Annerley, Seapark, Umtentweni and Oslo Beach,
and the inland suburbs of Albertsville, Marburg and Merlwood.
Ski-boats launch from the calm water of the Umzimkulu, which is
perfect for wind surfing, skiing and canoeing, or taking a trip
upstream on the river barge. |
