National car hire
companies have offices in Margate and Scottburgh, and will deliver
cars to most places on the South Coast. The completion of the new toll
road from Hibberdene to Southbroom has brought the wonders of the
South Coast even closer to your doorstep. The new road links with the
existing road network so that you can choose your route.
You can either travel
the length of the coast on the old South Coast main road which hugs
the coast and goes through most of the coastal towns, or you can stick
to the N2 freeway and toll road and zoom along in comfort a few
kilometers inland, turning off to your destination.
The freeway/toll road
option is pleasant, scenic drive that has reduced driving time from
Durban to the lower South Coast by more than half an hour. Road access
to the South Coast from further a field is easy and safe. If you are
traveling on the main N3 route from Johannesburg to the coast, you
slide off onto the N2 south just before entering Durban and just keep
going.
Durban to the Umkomaas
River bridge is an easy 35-minute drive. Port Shepstone is only an
hour and ten minutes from Durban. If you are traveling from the
Eastern Cape, the N2 takes you through Umtata and Kokstad to Harding,
Paddock and then Port Shepstone. the Stretch between Harding and
Paddock is currently being upgraded and widened.
